Although the faithful precast concrete wall has been an ideal enclosure solution for decades, concrete palisade fencing is hastily becoming a viable alternative. For privacy and security, specifically for enclosed plots surrounded by others, the former is still popular. However, for areas that need ground-level visibility or for owners who wish to appreciate a view, the semi-transparent latter is fast becoming the medium of choice.
At MFB Walling, we have been professionally and successfully producing, supplying and installing both versions of precast cemented products in Gauteng and its surroundings for over 26 years. Although the installation processes for both varieties are similar, there are differences. Allow us to walk you through the process of professional concrete palisade fencing installation.
Installation Process
Our professional sales team and independently contracted erectors first assess and survey the land where the walling will traverse:
- Survey and Safety Inspections: Before breaking ground, we do a thorough examination of the full length or perimeter of the area to be enclosed. Cognisance is taken of the slope, gradient, ground clearance and top clearance. Soil types and densities are also taken into account. Access points are notated (such as vehicle and pedestrian gates). The locations of electrical lines and connections, sewage, plumbing and other services infrastructure are also noted to avoid causing damage in the foundation phase.
- Foundation and Cross Beams: Our concrete palisade fencing is available in 1.8m and 2.4m heights. Up to 3m long slotted posts are planted firmly and equidistant in foundation beds of cement that are 600mm deep and 450mm x 450mm but may be larger in “looser” or “softer” soil types.
Once the vertical anchors are set and square and the cement is completely dry, the cross beams (or mounting rails) are fitted both at the top and bottom, into the availed slotted holes in the posts.
- Strutting and Paling: The vertical struts (or pales) which fill the spaces between the posts are centred and spaced approximately 200mm apart. Pre-moulded holes in both the cross beams and the vertical struts allow for easy mounting to the beams. With equal and pre-determined spacing, there are nine struts fitted to every 2m length of fencing.
- Nuts and Bolts: The beams and struts are fastened together using washers, nuts and bolts fabricated from mild steel. These are passed through the pre-moulded holes, tightened and any spaces between the steel and cement are filled with a 2:1 sand-to-cement mixture. These steel parts can be galvanised upon request. However, the tight-fitting mount together with the cement grouting provide a secure fit and corrosion-resistant bedding.
All these concrete components encase a grid of carbon steel rods. These rods are embedded within the posts, beams and struts. Once all three are webbed into a single structure, it forms an almost impregnable barrier that is secure, semi-transparent and aesthetically pleasing.
As additional benefits, our concrete palisade fencing is almost maintenance-free and could be topped with electric fencing or razor wire for added security. The design is effective in separating people and traffic, encircling public and private properties, and estates and securing large facilities.
